Companies income tax filing deadline and penalties in Nigeria
Under the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025, the self-assessment companies income tax return is due within six months after the end of the company's accounting year.
Key deadlines
- Annual return: within 6 months after the accounting year end (a 31 December year end means 30 June).
- First return of a new company: within 18 months from incorporation.
- Payment: due with the return; instalments may be possible with approval.
The cost of being late
Late filing attracts a penalty of ₦100,000 for the first month and ₦50,000 for each further month the return remains outstanding. Unpaid tax attracts a 10% late payment penalty and interest.
Penalty rules can change — always confirm current amounts with NRS before relying on them.
